Weeks before important state elections, a leading Muslim politician in Mumbai, India, was shot dead on Saturday while police investigated the involvement of a well-known crime group.
Outside his son’s office in Mumbai, Indian media reported that 66-year-old local politician and former minister in Maharashtra state, Baba Siddique, was shot many times in the chest.
The shooting precedes elections scheduled for later this year and follows weeks after Siddique’s security detail was strengthened upon death threats.
“The attack will be fully looked into, and the attackers will face harsh punishment,” Pawar said in a statement. “Also traced will be the mastermind behind the attack.”
Under strict security, former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique was buried on Sunday night with the state honours in front of a large gathering including political figures. Former three-time MLA from Bandra West and National Congress Party (NCP) member Siddique was shot dead on Saturday in Bandra East.
Four of the at least six bullets fired at Mr Siddique in close proximity to his son Zeeshan landed in his chest. Three individuals conducted the shooting amid Dussehra celebrations. Said sources, the two suspects detained in Mr. Siddique’s murder said they belonged to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Still, the gang is not accountable for the murder, which was committed even though the minister had “Y’ security”. Police assume it to a contract killing.
Known for arranging lavish parties, Siddique was connected to several Bollywood celebs.
